Fertilising is a vital part of paddock maintenance to get good grass growth. Without fertilising the soil receives very little nutrients and grass growth can be limited so allowing weeds to take hold, and the quantity and quality of the grass as a feed is reduced.
There are a numerous different fertilisers that can be applied depending on the horses/owners requirements. For example lamonitic prone horses would require a low nitrogen, slow release fertiliser.
